PROFESSIONAL WARDROBE SUGGESTIONS:
• Think about having one of your outfit selections repeat your eye color, especially a long sleeve shirt or sweater.
• Leather, suede or outerwear jackets worn over an outfit adds variety to your session. We can do some photographs with your jacket and some without to give an outfit more options.
• Do not choose a garment that is too tight. This problem is usually obvious in the photographs, and will add weight.
• Jewelry is fun to wear, but watches are not appropriate in portraits.
• Make sure to dress from head to toe! Think through each outfit to make sure you have shoes, hose, dark socks, undergarments, belts and jewelry to coordinate. Bring plenty of options and we will be happy to help you decide which ones will photograph best.
• Why do we so strongly recommend long sleeves?
Unless you want to feature your armpits and elbows, long sleeves are the best choice. Short sleeves or sleeveless clothing eliminate over half our options of poses. When you look at a great portrait your eye should go to the person’s face. Arms steal emphasis away from the face. If you must wear sleeveless clothing make it only 1 of your outfits.
What makes you look slimmer?
* Darker clothing, especially pants
* Long sleeve clothing
* Clothes that fit properly
* A little color is great, but too tan makes faces look rounder and heavier
* Shoes with heels, ESPECIALLY MODERN HEELS ARE GREAT!
* Low contrast outfits are best, dark pants and darker shirts
* AVOID HORIZONTAL STRIPES!!
Other considerations
Don’t worry about blemishes! We have the miracle of retouching those in your final photographs.
Guys: Make sure you have a fresh shave. A five o’clock shadow cannot be removed in your finished portraits.
If you plan to have a hair cut, try to schedule it at least one week prior to your session. This is especially true in the summer when a fresh cut may reveal untanned skin.
Remember, expression is up to you. We normally photograph about 60% smiles and 40% serious. If your decision is not to smile, RESOLVE that with your parents prior to your session.
VARIETY IS KEY TO GREAT IMAGES…
Get the most out of your session by following these basic guidelines…
The PARENT Pleaser
One of your outfits should be very classic and timeless. THIS DOES NOT MEAN IT HAS TO BE “BORING!”
Select clothing that will not be outdated in just a few years. It is likely that a portrait created in this outfit will be chosen as a wall portrait for your home. You may consider discussing this with your parents and deciding in which room the portrait will be displayed. Coordinating your outfit with the room’s décor is a smart move. Matching the color and formality of the room gives the wall portrait a decorators touch.
Layering & Accessories are Easy! Think: L a y e r s !
The SENIOR Pleaser
This outfit is 180 degrees in the opposite direction from outfit #1! This outfit can be trendy and fun. Wear something your friends will recognize you in. This is for your personality to shine through.
We love to photograph unique pieces. Think of your outfit as a “Costume of yourself.” What pieces can you bring to truly illustrate WHO YOU ARE. Accessories are great; hats, coats, scarves, boots, bandanas, vintage pieces…ANYTHING goes!

Outdoor Outfits:
(May through November 1)
Absolutely avoid white! Look to colors in nature such as browns, tans, greens, and blues. Also, avoid wearing shorts. Casual clothing that you can get down in the grass in is best. Remember to carry the color theme throughout your entire outfit, no white shoes. (Even during the warm months, long sleeves are superior to short.) Fall colors are ALWAYS a recommended choice…the rich, saturated tones will compliment any skin type, and look great in our homes for years to come.
After November 1, outdoor appointments are available weather and temperature permitting.
